The first choice for UN agencies, NGOs and survey teams: 280 mm of clearance, an open one-tonne steel bed with tie-downs, steel bullbar and raised snorkel.
Rugged underpinnings with highway manners: the right car for the coast road to Baucau and Jaco Island, or for a delegation that has to arrive looking fresh.
Nimble, economical and forgiving on broken city asphalt. Easy to park by the Dili waterfront, with enough clearance to ignore potholes and drainage dips.

The classic mountain traverse. From Dili you climb through forest to the cool highlands of Aileu (900 m) and the old guesthouses of Maubisse (1,400 m). The branch road to Hatu-Builico, base camp for sunrise climbs of Mount Ramelau, is unpaved and deeply rutted: low range from the first bend.
Field note
Night temperatures at Hatu-Builico drop below 8 °C. Hire a local guide for the 2.5-hour climb on foot to the summit.
Out along the north coast through Manatuto to Baucau, the old Portuguese hill town. From Baucau to Lospalos the road is scenic but slow, and the last stretch into Nino Konis Santana National Park turns to rock and jungle. Tutuala is the end of the road; Jaco Island sits just off the cape.
Field note
Jaco Island is sacred (lulik). Overnight camping on the island is not allowed; local boats at Tutuala beach take day visitors across.
Along the western coast past Liquiçá and the old Dutch fort at Maubara, to the border at Batugade, then up into the hills to Balibo. The fort looks across the Savu Sea towards Indonesia’s Alor islands and has a good community museum.
Field note
Taking a rental vehicle across the land border into West Timor needs separate paperwork, arranged at least 14 days ahead.
For people who want the whole island: over the mountain spine past Maubisse and Ainaro, down through the coffee country around Same, to the black-sand coast at Betano. Wet-season mud and unbridged streams mean only high-clearance 4WDs with low range and a snorkel should try it.
Field note
Mobile reception can drop out between Maubisse and Same. We recommend adding the satellite messenger for this route.
Drive onto the Ro-Ro ferry at Dili port for a crossing of around two and a half hours, sometimes with spinner dolphins alongside. From Beloi pier on Atauro, the island tracks run over coral gravel and volcanic rock below Mount Manucoco, with famous reef diving just offshore.
Field note
Ferry days change. We confirm the departure, book the vehicle space and brief you on fuel (sold from drums on the island); you leave with a sealed 20 L spare diesel can.

Every vehicle carries a full-size spare, jack, wheel brace and warning triangles. If something fails, our Dili dispatch sends a mobile mechanic or delivers a replacement vehicle to you.
District capitals such as Baucau, Maliana, Gleno and Suai have fuel stations. In remote mountain areas fuel is often sold in bottles at the roadside, so fill up before leaving Dili and top up at half a tank.
